this chair has nothing to do with this post other than it looks a bit spooky

I wouldn’t consider my past experiences with the unexplained “haunted” or anything, at least, I didn’t consider them that way until recently.  So, let me rephrase that, I’ve never really linked any of the unexplained things I’ve experienced in my past with anything “haunted” until recently.

There, that’s better.

I’m kind of glad I’ve said that and it’s off my chest now.  I’ve debated about writing a blog post about this for the past few weeks, but feel I need to.  I need to tell someone about my experiences, actually, since I’m blogging about it, I apparently need to tell a few someones.  I don’t want you to think I’m one of those crazy people that calls in mediums when things start falling off of shelves.  I’m also not one to pull out an Ouiji board on any occasion (I learned my lesson when a babysitter I had wanted to play some tricks on me – scared me to DEATH for at least a month).  Things might happen in my surroundings, I can’t explain them, and I chock it up to having a new story to tell overnight guests to give them a bit of a chill during the night.

But something is happening lately and I can’t put my finger on it and it won’t stop.  It’s starting to be the bump in the night that’s keeping me awake and slightly nervous.

Let’s rewind back to 1989 0r 1990 (it was so long ago, I can’t remember when it was).  I slept with a certain pillow that I hugged each night.  If it fell of the bed, I automatically reached down to pick it up.  Nothing unusual about this.  Pillow falls, Erin picks it up.  Until one night, the pillow fell and what I saw when I reached down to pick it up had me freeze in my tracks (or reach, as it were).  My pillow was laying in a pool of glowing light… it was a soft light… and it oozed out from under my bed in a half circle shape.  Something was under my bed and something was making that light.  I quickly abandoned the nightly rescue of my pillow and peered over the other side of my bed.  Nothing.  Not even a hint of light.  So back over to the other side I went, and there was that light.

“MOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM”

My mom ran into the room to see what was up.  I told her to look on the side of my bed and that there was a light.  She didn’t see it.  She went back to bed and that was that.  I was seeing things, I guess.  I went on to see that light for the next few months and then, just like it came, it was gone.  I called my mom in to see the light almost weekly, but she never saw it.  Not once.  As an adult I asked if she was just trying to keep me from being scared, but she assured me, she didn’t see it.

That was the only unexplained happening that comes to mind for the first 25 years of my life.  See, pretty uneventful, nothing to really make a big deal out of.  However, when I was 25, a mirror was thrown at me.  Okay, that might be dramatic, but that’s the best way to describe what happened.   I had just moved into a very old house that I felt very comfortable in (never mind that my cat NEVER trusted a single space in that house).  A friend of mine gave me an old dresser with a matching mirror for my bedroom.  It was the perfect dresser for the space.  A couple of weeks after moving it in, I was standing in the bedroom and something in the mirror of the dresser caught my eye.  I looked up at my reflection from across the room just in time for the mirror to tip forward and slide off the front of the dresser.

Okay, this wouldn’t be so strange if it slid bottom first, but it didn’t.  It tilted forward and slid off on to the floor.  Almost as if something shoved it forward.  This was definately strange, but I was the only witness.  It’s hard to explain what happened.  Maybe I saw it wrong.  Maybe I remember it wrong.  I most certainly don’t, but to those who hear the story, there is surely a reasonable explanation.

Maybe.

I haven’t figured it out yet.  Nothing else ever fell off of a dresser or shelf in that room.

Now, fast forward to a few months ago.  Things are happening again… also in my bedroom.  One morning I woke up to find my smart phone laying a few feet away from the bedside table I leave it on at night.  It has an Otterbox with a rubber case, so the odds of it sliding off of the dresser are low, but okay, it must have.  A few nights later, the same thing happened.  This has happened off and on for the past few months.  Sometimes it wakes me up at night when it hits the floor, sometimes I find it in the morning.  Before you assume I’m ignoring the fact that it could vibrate itself off of the nightstand, I checked for missed calls, texts or notifications… there were none on the nights that it hit the floor.

I ignored this for a few months.  Picking up my phone in the morning and setting it back on my nightstand.  However, it happened this past weekend when I was home alone.  It startled me awake and I shot out of bed to face my closet door slightly open with the light on.  That’s easy, I left the closet light on and didn’t latch the door.  I’m not worried about that, but the light startled me in my sleepy state and I was left trying to go back to sleep thinking of the first season of Paranormal Activity.  You know the one, the girl sleep walks and stands next to her boyfriend for minutes upon minutes just standing there… sleeping.  CREEPY.

The phone fell off the nightstand again last night and so I automatically thought of that scene in the movie.  It’s going to happen EVERYTIME that dang phone ends up on the floor and I can’t sleep while thinking of that.  I’m hoping it stops soon.

Do you see a pattern here?  Hauntings?  I don’t know.  Maybe.  Definitely unexplainable situations.  I will admit that it is starting to leave me more on the paranoid side than not.  What is doing this?  Why has this always happened in my bedroom?  What is going on?  It’s creeping me out.

‘Tis the season, right?

  1. Okay I think you should put your phone in a basket or something, and see what happens. I’m a believer. Like you said, I’m not calling anyone in, but I believe in these things though. ♥

  2. Oh, and could the light on the side of your bed have been the moon? just something that came to mind. 😉

It wasn’t the moon! It was coming from under my bed. I remember it so vividly. I think I will put my phone in a basket or something. That might stop it, at least.
